The Beginner Homemaker Series Part 2: Breaking it Down

Welcome back to the Beginner Homemaker Series! The goal of this series is to help homemakers such as myself that struggle to maintain the seemingly overwhelming role!

This is part two, breaking down the roles of homemaking. If you haven’t checked out part one, the introduction and creating a routine, then go ahead and click over! I’ll be waiting here for you when you finish!

Before we get into this, I’d like to make something perfectly clear: you are doing an amazing job! Your kiddos are alive and loved. Your home is full of life (that’s why it’s messy; I know from experience!). Even if your kids are older, grown, or you don’t have kids, it’s easy to get down on ourselves and criticize how well we are doing things.

But the fact that you’re here and wanting to do better shows even more how great of a mom/homemaker you are! Always wanting to improve shows your tenacity and desire to be better for yourself and your loved ones! So, go you!

Whew, now that that’s out there, let’s break it down!

Breaking Down your Role as a Homemaker

Have you ever seen that graphic that breaks down all the roles of a mother and attaches salaries to each role?

The amount of work we as homemakers and mothers do is astounding, and even more so when it’s broken down into individual roles.

In order to improve my homemaking abilities, I first sat down and listed out each and every category that I am responsible for.

My list includes:

  • Cooking & Grocery Shopping
  • Cleaning
  • Caring for my Toddler
  • Garden
  • Budget
  • Scheduling

These categories may look a bit different for you and that’s okay! Make it work for you.

Once I listed out these overall categories, I broke each one down by individual tasks.

Now here’s where you can easily become overwhelmed once more and throw in the towel.

I suggest starting with one main category and listing out each and every task that falls under that topic.

And then stop. Put your focus on integrating the tasks from that single category into your day for a week.

Referring back to part one of this series, grab your newly made routine and add the tasks into your blocks.

Here’s how I break down my categories to help you get started!

Cooking & Grocery Shopping

This category probably seems pretty straight forward, and in reality it is.

But when it comes to relieving those feelings of being overwhelmed, having everything written down is helpful.

Here is how my Cooking & Grocery Shopping category breaks down:

  • Breakfast for EK & Myself
  • Lunch for EK & Myself
  • Two Snack Times for EK
  • Dinner for Entire Family
  • Pack Lunch for Hubs
  • Meal Planning
  • Grocery Shopping & Pickup

As I said, these tasks are pretty much self explainatory.

Yet I write them down in my routine planner every day! Why?

It’s all about creating a habit. If I write down what we’re having for dinner, I’m so much more likely to actually cook rather than asking my husband to bring takeout.

Add meal planning and grocery shopping to your routine on or close to payday so you’ll know when it’s time to tackle these tasks!


Ah, the bain of my existance.

I’ll let you in on a (not so) secret: I hate to clean.

I just do. I wish I was one of those people who found cleaning cathartic, but I’m just not!

However, it’s something that has to be done!

Here’s how my Cleaning category breaks down (Please note I follow Clean Mama‘s schedule):

  • Daily Tasks
    • Fix Beds
    • Wipe Counters
    • Dishes
    • Laundry
    • Pick Up Clutter
    • Check Floors & Clean as Needed
  • Weekly Tasks
    • Bathrooms
    • Dust
    • Vacuum
    • Mop
  • Monthly Tasks
    • These change monthly as shown on Clean Mama’s schedule

Honestly, Clean Mama saved my sanity when it comes to cleaning.

It’s so easy to follow and is so simple to integrate into my routine!

I typically schedule cleaning time during my daughter’s nap time except vacuum days.

Caring for my Toddler

This is probably the one part of my day I wing the most.

I do have a guideline I attempt to follow, but she runs the show.

Here’s my breakdown of my tasks for Caring for my Turdler Toddler:

  • Wake Up & Morning Routine
  • Sensory/Stimulating Play
  • Reading/Quiet Play
  • One Nap
  • Outside Play/Outing
  • Play Time with Dad
  • Bath Time
  • Bed Time Routine

Sometimes (a lot of times), this entire list doesn’t happen in a day.

And that’s okay. I go with her needs! She won’t be a hopeless case if we miss one day of reading.


Okay, in full disclaimer, I am a beginner gardener. Like, I thought I was bad at homemaking until I started gardening.

But it’s a learning process that I’m enjoying! Mostly.

Anyways, here’s my basic task list for Gardening:

  • Water Plants if Needed
  • Fertilize as Needed
  • Weed
  • Pinch Yellow/Brown Leaves
  • Stare at Seedlings Willing Them to Grow


When my husband gave me full reign of our finances, I was lost as a grain of rice in a snow storm.

I had never really had much control over money in the past and had little experience with it.

However, after much trial and error, I’ve managed to find a method that works. I’ll discuss this in detail on a later post.

For now, here is my list of tasks for Maintaining our Budget:

  • Create New Budget Each Paycheck
  • Enter New Expenses Daily
  • Mark Bill Due Dates in Planner
  • Pay Bills in a Timely Manner
  • Discuss Finances Weekly as a Couple
  • Track Savings


Finally, my last major category of responsibility is maintaining the family schedule.

It can get confusing trying to keep track of checkups, eye doctor appointments, dentist appointments, chiropractor appointments, church functions, etc.

This area is incredibly important to create and maintain an organizational system.

My tasks in Scheduling include:

  • Making Appointments for Each Family Member
  • Recording Appointment Dates & Times in the Planner
  • Reminding my Husband of Appointments (this one is important)
  • Taking my Toddler & I to our Appointments

Final Thoughts

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, it is important to only focus on one category at a time.

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed if you take it all on at once (ask me how I know).

Pick your favorite (or least favorite; I don’t judge) area and integrate it into your routine. Maintain that routine for a week before adding a second category. Repeat until all the main areas are a part of your daily/weekly routine!
